Base
The bottom panel or section of the crate or box and all it's components.

Blocking and/or Bracing
Materials & labor used primarily to prevent free movement of the packaged or unitized item. In addition, it is used to distribute the load of the contents over as much of the container surface as possible and to support the contents in such a way that the load is applied at the strongest points of the container

Cap
The top, sides and ends of the crate or box when not attached to the base, or a top panel with cleats attached for protection of palletized loads to protect the top of the item, such as drums.

Cleats
The lumber boards which provide the framing structure to reinforce the crate or box and add bulk to the edges for nailing or stapling purpose.

Top

Desiccant
A bagged activated clay material used in vacuum packing or Method 50 per MIL-STD-2073.This material is best utilized when placed in a sealed foil barrier bag to maintain a controlled humidity level

Diagonals
Frame or cleat members positioned between parallel frame members and placed at angles of nearly 45 degrees to them. Diagonals serve as braces to insure rigidity in the crate or box.

Drop End
Boxes and crates where the end panels extend down past the base to floor level.

Top

Edge Cleats
The cleats or framing members which align the edges of the plywood creating a border around the edges of a box or crate panel.

End frame members
These frame or cleat members are similar to side frame members but are perpendicular to the long dimension

Top

Filler Strips
Boards placed across the ends of thin, non-load bearing floor boards which serve to fill the space below the lower frame member the sides.

Top

Headers
Headers either transverse members at each end of skids or bases or longitudinal members at each end of top joist. Headers in bases serve to hold the base together as a unit, to transfer loads to the outside skids, and to provide a fastening member for the end panels.

Height Or Depth
The distance from the top to bottom of the crate or box excluding roofing joist and the base.

Horizontal Braces
Members positioned between struts and parallel to the upper and lower frame members and serve to reduce the unsupported span of the sheathing material (Plywood).

Humidity Indicator
A paper card or Plastic/Aluminum plug with impregnated spots of a blue chemical which indicates the percentage of relative humidity present by changing color from blue to pink as the humidity levels rises.

Top

Intermediate Cleats
The cleats or framing members that are within the center of a box or crate panel that structurally reinforce the panel and also allow joint for connecting pieces of plywood.

Top

Joist
Members extending across the crate or box underneath the top which serve to support and transfer vertical stacking loads to the side panels. Joist also serve to prevent crushing or buckling of top panels when slings or grab hooks are to lift the box.

Top

Load Bearing Floorboards
The transverse members of bases which serve to distribute and transfer loads to the outside skids.

Top

Rubbing Strips
The longitudinal members nailed to the underside of bases to provide for sling and forklift handling.

Top

Secondary Intermediate Cleats
The intermediate framing members or cleats that are placed between the edge cleats and the intermediate cleats.

Sheathing
Primarily plywood but also boards nailed to the frame members and enclosing the crate.

Side Frame Members
The members of tops without joist which are parallel to the long dimension and serve as fastening members and to tie the construction together.

Skids
Skids are the longitudinal members attached to the bottom of the crate or box which serve to support and transfer the load to the side panels.

Sleepers
The members underneath the floor of the skid-type base to which the item(s) are anchored through the floor so that the tie down stress will be evenly distributed.

Struts
The vertical frame members placed between the upper and lower frame members of the side and end panels and serve as columns for supporting vertical stacking loads. The ends Struts are occasionally referred to as corner posts.

Top

Upper and Lower Framing Members
Horizontal members and the top and bottom of the side and end panels which serve to tie the construction together.

Top

Vacuum Pack
Accomplished by placing item or assembly , with the proper amount of activated desiccant into a water-vaporproof barrier. Corrosion will not normally occur when a relative humidity of 30 percent is maintained within the barrier. Effective for a period of 18 to 24 months.

Vertical Joist Supports
Vertical members attached to the inside face of the sides of crates and boxes which serve to support the joist and assist the struts in supporting vertical stacking loads.
