Recently, a large global food producer decided to move a sizeable plant from California to Monterrey, Mexico. A freight forwarder who had an existing relationship with both the food producer and Chick asked us to bid as a subcontractor on one fraction of the relocation project, but the bid was unsuccessful. Chick and the freight forwarder then worked together on a revised proposal for the large second phase of the project, the removal and relocation of four production lines, and the new successful proposal incorporated packaging and facilities solutions coordinated between different divisions of Chick, as well as transport by the freight forwarder. As part of the bid process, Chick’s San Antonio, TX facility invested in a web-based documentation and controls system that was well received by both the client and the freight forwarder, and Chick Packaging of Northern CA fabricated the common skids and also procured the packaging materials.
When the removal of the four production lines was approximately half finished, the food producer approached Chick directly to devise a construction plan and bid for the next relocation phase, the installation of new paste storage tanks with structures at the new plant in Mexico. This customer indicated that they wanted to work directly with Chick because our existing removal project was running so smoothly and the quality of the supervision was above their expectations.
Ultimately, Chick won this bid and three others from the same customer by demonstrating we could easily handle all the company was asking for. Chick’s winning contracts were based on our ability to streamline the process by providing a full complement of management, engineering, procurement, construction, relocation, packaging, and logistics services supported by our strategic locations. This capacity meant that we could accommodate the nature of the installation and its time restraints by soliciting fabrication bids for the super structures in the US which were then exported to Mexico for installation by Chick.
